A SPORTING event in Summer Wine country is making a comeback.

The Last of the Summer Tri which last year raised £500 for Holme Valley Mountain Rescue is hoping to raise even more this year.

It is hoped the next event, First of the Summer Tri, taking place on April 14 at Holmfirth Pool, will raise even more money for this important cause.

Aside from working all year round to help find missing people, members of the rescue team will also help marshal the triathlon event.

The October Tri was a sell-out, perhaps driven by inspiration from the Olympics and Yorkshire’s successful triathlon competitors, the Brownlee brothers.

Many people came to the event, from as far away as Whitby and Surrey.

Organisers expect the Tri to be a sell-out again this year for both the April and October events, with around 300 people expected to take part on each occasion.

Race organiser Ian Davies said: “As well as promoting sport in the local community and raising money for such an important cause, it is hoped the race will draw people to the beautiful Holme Valley as a new attraction after the end of the TV series Last of the Summer Wine.

“People who enter the event can be seen swimming up and down the local swimming pools, hence boosting local gym memberships. They can also be seen pounding the streets and cycling all over in order to get fit, and hopefully buying sports supplies from local shops.

“It is hoped that competitors are role models and will inspire younger family and friends to get involved with sport.”

Manufacturer Fired Up Corporation, whose brands include Adam fire and fireplaces, are the main sponsors.

Chief executive Richard Kaye said: “Fired Up are pleased to be part of a local event with so many positive impacts within the local community.

“We look forward to many Tri events to come and hope to raise even more money for the Holme Valley Mountain Rescue.”
