Drivers and pedestrians say they were left in the dark about the cause of a streetlights blackout.

A one-mile stretch of Woodhead Road, from Hinchliffe Mill to Holmbridge, has been left without working streetlights for two months.

At night the road has become a hazard to pedestrians and motorists, residents say.

And after dusk the blackout has been affecting the custom of the local pub and convenience store, traders say.

The problem, says Northern Powergrid, is thought to have been caused by a cable fault.

Work has now been scheduled by the company which manages the area’s electricity infrastructure.

But despite requests for information neither the company nor Kirklees Council had offered an explanation about the fault, claim residents and traders.

Alan Jarvis, licensee of the Stumble Inn, said: “It’s affecting both my business and that at the Londis shop.

“There are a lot of elderly people who won’t venture out when it’s like that.

“People don’t feel safe walking down the road in the dark.

“Everyone has been phoning and emailing Kirklees Council and they haven’t had the decency to respond to anyone.”

A Northern Powergrid spokesperson said: “We were notified by the local authority that streetlights in Woodhead Road in Holmfirth were not working and we subsequently identified an underground cable fault on our network.

“There were access issues in the area which we needed to work which have now been resolved.

“We have arranged for traffic management to be in place next week so we can carry out a repair to get the streetlights back on for local residents. We will work to keep disruption to a minimum during the course of the repair.”

A Kirklees Council spokesperson said: “The lights are currently not working because of a fault in the underground cable.

“Unfortunately, because of access issues, the work could not be completed when we received the complaint in April.

“Our understanding is that Northern Powergrid have now solved the access issue and have programmed the work for next week.

“We would like to apologise for the delay to local residents, but are confident the repair will be completed next week.”
