A STUDENT smashed his car into a wall after drinking, a court heard.

Matthew Turibamwe, of Moorlands Crescent, Scholes, Holmfirth, appeared before Kirklees magistrates yesterday.

He admitted drink-driving in the early hours of September 27.

Prosecutor Vanessa Schofield said that at just after 3am Turibamwe was driving his red Ford KA.

He was on Back Lane at Holmfirth when he lost control and hit the wall of a house.

Police were called and spoke to the 22-year-old.

Ms Schofield said: “He stayed at the scene and told them: ‘It’s my car, I’ve been drinking and I’m sorry’.

“The defendant made full admissions and was really remorseful.”

Police could smell alcohol on Turibamwe’s breath and asked him to give samples at the police station.

These revealed that he had 71 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

The legal limit is 35mg.

Magistrates were told the Kirklees College student had never been in trouble with police previously.

Mark Brookes, mitigating, said that his client’s family background needed to be considered.

He said that Turibamwe had been living at the family home in Longwood but was now staying with his aunt.

Mr Brookes said: “His father is due to be released from prison following an allegation of assault against him.

“His aunt believes this was playing on his mind at the time.”

Magistrates banned him from driving for 17 months. They also ordered him to pay £110 fine, £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
