Holmfirth High student Melissa Gledhill has never had a proper haircut.

That was until now.

After more than a decade with just the odd trim, Melissa went the whole hog and had around 14 inches cut off her waist-length hair at The Hair Room, Holmfirth – and it was all in a good cause.

Melissa, of Scholes, decided to take the drastic step in order to donate her tresses to The Little Princess Trust which takes hair donations and has wigs made for children who have lost their hair through illness or chemotherapy.

And afterwards she had no regrets: “I like it,” she said. “It feels a little bit funny, but it will be much easier to look after.

“I wanted to do it to help other children and I’m glad I did it.”

Melissa left the hairdressers and headed off that evening on a four-day school trip to Paris. She also raised £250 to donate to help the charity pay for the wigs to be made.

Mum Janet said: “Melissa’s hair was down to her waist. She has never had it properly cut, just the occasional trim to keep it tidy. She has always had long hair.

“We’ll be sending her hair off to the charity by recorded delivery! It is for a very good cause and we are all really proud of Melissa.”
