The prospect of a large supermarket in Holmfirth has moved a step closer.

Members of Holmfirth Cricket Club have now agreed in principle to move the club if they can sell the site.

It was revealed in December that six bidders – including three major supermarkets – were going head-to-head for the town centre plot.

The cricket club and adjacent Holmfirth Bowling Club are thought to be listening to offers of around £4 million.

Cricket club chairman, David Whiteley, said members and trustees had now voted to go ahead with the plan in principle.

And he revealed the list of retailers had been whittled down to just two – but said a confidentiality agreement prevented him from revealing who they were.

“We’re meeting with one on Thursday and one on Friday,” he said.

“I can’t name names but it’s gone through the trustees, the committee and now the members who have unanimously passed it.”

It is thought it was supermarket giant Sainsburys which first targeted the land.

It comes just a few months after Tesco lost a public inquiry to build a new store .

The cricket club has been at the heart of Holmfirth for more than 150 years.

Its Bridge Fold ground is a short walk from the town centre.

It is thought possible locations for the new cricket ground could be the Midlothian site off New Mill Road or between the Cattle Market and Brook Dyeing Company’s Bottoms Mills off Woodhead Road.
