Jayne Fenton is a woman on a mission.

Two or three times a week she heads down to Holmfirth Baths to swim lengths of the pool.

So far the primary school teacher has notched up 300, and she plans to do another 1,780 over the next three months.

That will be 26 miles, exactly the distance between her Jackson Bridge home and the City Varieties Music Hall in Leeds, which will host a gala concert in aid of the Hearing Fund UK on August 30.

Jayne, 42, the mother of two deaf children, is hoping that the public will get behind her and sponsor her 26-mile swim for the deaf charity.

The concert will be a special occasion for the Fenton family when daughter Niamh, six, will play a violin duet with 1970s pop star Merrill Osmond’s son Justin, who is also deaf.

Merrill and Justin are travelling from Utah to Huddersfield in June so that the two youngsters can get to know each other and practise their chosen piece, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

Jayne’s son, Keir, who is profoundly deaf and wears cochlear implants, will be performing on keyboard at the charity concert. He is a keen musician and for the last two years has been a member of the Yorkshire Music Group run by Music and the Deaf, the inspirational Huddersfield charity started by Dr Paul Whittaker.

Last year Keir met Merrill, lead singer of Osmonds ,and his son Justin in their roles as patron and president of the Hearing Fund UK, which has nominated Music and the Deaf as their charity partner.

Younger sister Niamh who wears hearing aids, told Justin that she would also like to play the violin. This led to her being presented with a violin and weekly music lessons.

Jayne, who teaches at Grange moor Primary School, said: “I was a big fan of Donny Osmond in my younger days and my parents had a lot of Osmond records in the 1970s.

“I am hoping my swim will raise money for The Hearing Fund, a fantastic charity. Also I am hoping that it will help me to get fit! It is great that both The Hearing Fund UK and Music and the Deaf exist to support deaf children access music and it is great to see how deaf children can progress with their support.”
