Homes at brickworks set to win go-ahead

PLANS for up 250 homes on a brickworks site are set to be approved.

PLANS for up 250 homes on a brickworks site are set to be approved.

Elliotts Bricks says it wants to move away from Lepton to a better site.

It has been making bricks at Spa Green, between Wakefield Road and Fenay Bridge Road, since 1902.

Company bosses are considering moving to Blackley, near Elland, or to sites at Featherstone or South Kirby, it has been revealed.

Fears about building homes on the Lepton land were raised at a public meeting last September.

Objectors said they were worried about the impact of more traffic on surrounding roads.

Now a decision is expected to be made by Kirklees councillors who are meeting on Thursday.

Officials are recommending the outline application for planning permission is approved.

Talks on exact development details would be held later.

Houses could be built on a series of plateaux within the site, it has been disclosed.

A new roundabout could be built on Wakefield Road.

Planners have also revealed that Elliotts will be asked to make a cash contribution to improve facilities at local schools.

More space would be needed at both Lepton C of E Primary School and King James's High School, Almondbury, if new homes were built, says a report.
