AN animal charity with a branch in Huddersfield has announced a major rehousing target.

The Retired Greyhound Trust wants to find homes for 3,000 former racing greyhounds by the end of this year.

In 2004, the trust had its most successful year to date, with 2,700 retired greyhounds being re-housed.

In the past five years 10,000 greyhounds have found a new lease of life.

The Huddersfield branch re-housed about 30 last year.

"An increasing number of people have discovered the delights of owning a retired greyhound. We're confident our challenging new target will be met," said Ivan Stocker, the trust's director.
