THE Honley mural is back.

Last month the Examiner reported how Reg Senior asked five local artists to create a memorial to Hope Bank Pleasure Grounds – an amusement park between Honley and Brockholes which closed in 1955.

But their work on Woodhead Road was obliterated by Kirklees Council workers who wrongly thought it was illegal.

However, the artists restarted the mural this week – and it’s here to stay.

Mr Senior said: “There were lots of favourable comments and people said we should start again.

“I’ve spoken to Clr Martyn Bolt, the environment Cabinet member for Kirklees Council, and he’s assured me that it won’t be whitewashed this time.”

Mr Senior has asked his solicitors to write to Kirklees Council requesting repayment of the £250 he has spent on paint for the second effort.

Honley artist Gareth Lewis and four friends had spent hours working on the tribute to Hope Bank, which used to attract thousands of visitors with its boating lakes, zoo and rollercoaster.

Clr Martyn Bolt hopes there will be no problems with the mural this time round.

He said: “I’ve spoken to Mr Senior and told him that provided the mural isn’t offensive it should be OK.”
