They call themselves the Hairy Wild Stallions.

And the group named after a band in the cult comedy film Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure are now helping to raise awareness around cancers and mental health issues affecting men.

Almost 20 members of staff from Honley High School and a couple of colleagues from Colne Valley High School have grown moustaches and joined the Movember quest.

And the ‘Wild Stallions’, as the men have dubbed themselves, are galloping towards their target of 800.

Funds have been raised by family and friends donating online and students raising money through sponsorship in school.

Team captain Noel O’Connor was delighted with the big response from staff and students.

He said: “Being part of the team, I can sympathise with the staff who are living with a moustache; it’s a nightmare!

“It has, however, been fun for the staff and the students in school who have enjoyed poking fun at their teachers. It has also allowed us all to focus on the serious issue of what the campaign hopes to achieve: raising funds and awareness of both physical and mental health issues for men.

“Although a couple of staff have grown quite attached to their furry friends, most team members and family are looking forward to a clean shave at the end of the month.”

Team member and acting deputy headteacher Paul Sharrock added: “The high-visibility of the various top lip growths has led to lots of questions by the students.

“This in itself has raised awareness of male health issues.”

Students have been impressed by their teachers’ efforts.

Alana Irving, said: “The teachers at Honley High have taken part in Movember and have done a great job to have not shaved their moustaches for a whole month.”

Fellow Year 7 pupil Freya Carnekie said: “I personally think Movember is a great time of the year. I think Mr O’Connor has done an absolutely incredible job for charity.”
