RECKLESS drivers have badly damaged a cricket pitch at Linthwaite.
Hooligans in cars and on bikes have chewed up the grass by racing each other and doing handbrake turns on the pitch at Linthwaite Cricket Club, off Manchester Road.
Club vice-president Donald Wood, who also looks after the grounds, said the tracks suggested two cars and a motorbike could have been involved.
He discovered the damage when he called at the club.
"It is badly damaged, but all the damage was in the outer field," said Mr Wood. "Fortunately the centre square was roped off and they hadn't been there."
He said there had been problems at the club with motorbikes before, but this was the most serious incident to date. He said there was no way of stopping them.
"If we lock the gate, we will annoy a lot of people who use the club footpath," he said.
"People cut through the cricket ground, then the recreation ground and go on to the canal path to get to Slaithwaite."
Mr Wood said the club's president had contacted the police about the damage.
However, he had his own message for the yobs.
"It isn't a cycle track, it isn't a race track, it's a cricket field for the people of Linthwaite. So keep out," he said.
