It is famed as a race with some of the most spectacular views and toughest hills in the region.

And now Lucie Fenton, sister on the inpatient unit at Overgate Hospice, in Elland, has signed up to take on its 10k Challenge next month.

The hospice road race starts and finishes at Trinity Academy in Holmfield, and Lucie has booked the day off to take part, receiving encouragement from the wider hospice team.

The event takes place on Sunday, April 17, and many staff members have also volunteered their time on the day to help marshal the event, and several nurses will be showing their support by handing out medals at the finish line.

Lucie said: “Getting involved in events like the 10k Challenge is so important and the nursing staff are always keen to support the efforts of the fundraising team. Without the continued support of the community we couldn’t provide our specialist care and so we are all glad to give our time and efforts whenever we can.”

Event fundraiser Rebecca Gill said: “We receive a wealth support from the entire hospice team each year and without it we simply wouldn’t be able to host events such as the 10k Challenge. We will all be there on the day to cheer Lucie on.”

Overgate is the only adult hospice in Calderdale, and since opening in 1981 has cared for over 7,000 patients and their families.

Anyone who would like to take part can register at 10k.overgatehospice.org.uk. Participants can take part in the full 10k or sign up for the shorter 5k.
