Summer is set to hit Huddersfield today...but blink and you might miss it.

It could be the hottest July day ever in town today if temperatures breach the record of 31.4°c (89°F) set just last year.

And weatherman Paul Stevens has said there is an outside chance of breaking the all-time record of 33.5°c (92°F), reached on August 3, 1990.

But just 24 hours later it could be hailing as thunderstorms hit town on Wednesday.

Whatever happens it looks certain to be the hottest day of the year so far.

Said Paul: “Tuesday will be very hot and humid with a high of around 30°c (86°F).

“The heat will be temporarily super charged as hot air from from Spain is super injected with water vapour from the Bay of Biscay.

“It will bring some uncomfortable but welcome heat and it means the July record might be up for grabs.

“But I think there’s only a 20% chance that the all-time record will go.

“That would be astonishing for this part of Yorkshire.”

After a slow start due to stubborn cloud cover, the heat began to build yesterday afternoon, reaching 26°c (79°F) in Huddersfield.

Said Paul: “Through Tuesday night and Wednesday, a thundery low will move north so a breakdown in the heat will be well underway with the rest of the week temperatures near normal, with a few showers but fresher conditions with good sunny spells.

“Severe thunderstorms are possible with hail, gusty winds and lightening which may lead to local disruption.

“Torrential downpours are likely which will clear east later on Wednesday as cooler fresher weather arrives for Thursday.”
