Housing plans for Dalton have been backed.
But a local resident feared it would turn the area around Holme Avenue into a ‘mini-Manhattan’.
Farrar Bamforth Associates Ltd, on behalf of the executors of HD Stephenson, want outline consent for housing.
No final indication on the number of houses has been given, although there was a suggestion of up to 26.
Clr Linda Wilkinson said she “understands residents concerns but we have to consider this on planning grounds”.
Clr Ken Sims added: “I feel sorry for these residents, we’re going to take this green space away from of them.”
The land is allocated for housing in Kirklees Council’s planning policy and it has previously had outline consent for housing in 1987 and 1991.
Residents objected with 33 individual letters and a petition signed by 38 people, citing highways and loss of green space as concerns.
The application was approved ten votes to two, with two abstentions.
