How slow can you go will be a quirky challenge at this year’s Examiner Charity Challenge.

For a new event has just been set up to see which cyclist can take the longest to ride just 10 metres.

And it is the brainchild of a 16-year-old who is off to Africa this summer to help on several projects in Kenya.

Harry Midgley is going on the four week trip in July to work on four projects to improve living standards and to help with environmental and wildlife conservation projects.

Harry, 16, and 14 classmates jumped at this chance offered to pupils of Shelley High school but they must each raise £3,800 fee to go and so far Harry’s reached the £2,000 mark with more than 500 pledges from businesses.

Harry and dad Chris are members of Holme Valley Wheelers Harry and on Sunday, May 18, Huddersfield Lions Club – which organises the Huddersfield Examiner Charity Challenge – have added a special challenge event to help Harry to raise more funds – a slow bike ride.

Challenge organiser Lion Bob Armitage, said: “We wouldn’t normally consider adding an event at such a late stage but Harry needs the money for a worthy cause and came with such a great event idea, so different from all the other race and run events, that we couldn’t say no.”

For a small fee competitors will try to take the longest time to ride a tarmac course of about 10 metres.

Chris said: “Anyone who can keep the bike still indefinitely without putting a foot down has the best chance of winning but we expect the winner to last only a few minutes. This event is open to children as well as adults . We’ll provide the bikes – you just come along, use your skill and win a prize.”

The challenge desperately needs more people to enter. All the events from walks through to bike rides and a horse ride are all set up. All people have to do is register for a charity or good cause close to their heart, get some sponsors, turn up on the day and enjoy it.

Bob added: “We can’t understand why pre-registered entries for all events are disappointingly down on last year at this stage. After all, the Challenge is a marvellous opportunity for anyone wishing to raise money for any charity, large or small, to get sponsors, come along and run, walk or ride and walk away with all the money. Apart from a small entry fee Huddersfield Lions take nothing for doing all the organising and administration.”
