Everyone knows cats and Christmas trees don’t mix - but one Huddersfield pet owner has come up with the perfect solution!

Claire Monkhouse was worried her cats Charlotte and Emily would pull over her tree and bring the festive decorations crashing down on top of them.

So in a bid to distract them from the tree, she decorated their scratching post with a sprig of festive fir, complete with a few sparkly baubles - and the genius idea worked!

Claire said: “We got our girls as kittens from Yorkshire Cat Rescue this summer and although they are growing fast, they are still very lively, full of mischief and love climbing.

“Having heard from our friends about how much cats love Christmas trees, I was fully expecting our little monkeys to create chaos once our tree was up.

“I’d bought them a new scratching post; the cunning plan being to present it to them to play with whilst I was putting up the tree as a distraction and I decided to make it festive for them by adding a broken branch from our tree.

Snooze time for Emily and Charlotte

“It seemed only right that they should have some baubles of their own to play with!

“So far, so good – although I am still half-expecting to get back to Huddersfield this evening and find that the girls have abandoned their new toy and be sitting at the top of our tree, with all the decorations strewn across the floor!”

Bless them!
