A MAJOR reform of the university application system has been called for by a Huddersfield University academic.

Deputy vice chancellor Prof Peter Slee says the scramble for places, which is predicted to be worse this year, could be reduced if students did not apply until they actually received their grades.

Too much time, he says is taken up dealing with students who do not reach their desired grades or who decide to go elsewhere.

Speaking as students across the country receive their A level grades he said: “At the moment students are applying with a lot of uncertainty. We do not know if the grades they have been predicted will be accurate.

“If a student needs three grade Bs to study on a course and they get three Cs then they would be unlikely to apply. Equally if they got three As then they may look for something better.”
