They have won over the hearts of leagues of music fans for their dynamic blend of ‘sci-fi’ folk pop.

But now the enviable talents of Huddersfield four piece Maia has been confirmed in trophy form after they were crowned most outstanding band by a high-ranking music guide.

They beat off tough competition from several shortlisted groups from across the whole county to be declared winners at an awards ceremony hosted by Yorkshire Gig Guide where they received a glass plaque in their honour.

And in true superstar style they had to accept their gong via video link due to their packed touring schedule across the country.

Yorkshire Gig Guide, which promotes regional events and musicians, held the showcase to celebrate the talents of pioneering musicians and clubs in the area.

The award was a surprise for lead singer Tom Clegg, who co-founded the band with Joe Haig, Simon Robinson and Will Fletcher while they were studying at the University of Huddersfield in 2008.

He said: “It was great to be recognised by local musicians and music fans for what we do. We created the band in Yorkshire but I think it’s fair to say that we don’t sound like we’re from the county.

“I didn’t know that we’d even been shortlisted so it was a big but very happy surprise – I guess we’ll have to get a trophy cabinet now.”

It is the latest bit of success for Maia who have been playing to packed shows both near and far which so far this year has included slots at several festivals including Holmfirth Festival of Folk and the Isle of Wight Festival.

When not on the road they have been busy recording new tracks in the studio and hope to turn them into an album to release in the near future.
