AN alcoholic who was given a five-year ASBO to stop him begging in Huddersfield bus station has been jailed for breaching a community order made last year.
Lexus James Wakefield, 28, was told to attend supervision and alcohol treatment sessions when he was given the order in December, but yesterday he admitted failing to turn up for a meeting on January 17.
Judge Jonathan Rose was told by prosecutor Clare Benson that the 12-month order was imposed for offences of stealing a leg of lamb from a shop and breaching the ASBO which had been made back in 2006.
Miss Benson said a report from the probation service indicated that no positive progress had been made and no more meaningful work had been carried out in respect of Wakefield’s drug and alcohol dependency.
Barrister Adam Birkby urged Judge Rose to give Wakefield, of Richmond Flats, Southgate, a further opportunity to comply with the order, but the judge said it had to be revoked.
“I have no doubt you’re trapped in the addiction to alcohol of which I have read much and which has been referred to,” the judge told Wakefield.
“This order was intended to help you. I am not at all convinced that you can respond to this order. Any further order is simply setting you up to fail.”
The judge sentenced Wakefield to 14 days in jail in place of the community order.
