Terrible weather failed to extinguish the fun at firework displays across Huddersfield over the weekend.

Torrential rain and gale force winds failed to keep people away from their annual dose of roman candles, sky rockets, treacle toffee and parkin.

On Saturday, thousands turned out for displays at Holmfirth, Birchencliffe, Crosland Hill and Elland.

Holmfirth Rotary Club raised over £1,000 for local charities, including Holme Valley Mountain Rescue, at their annual display at Sands Rec in Holmfirth.

Treasurer Paul Smelt said: “We all got absolutely soaked, but it was good fun. It took longer to get things lit, but we managed a good 20 minutes of fireworks.”

Lindley Swifts Rugby Club, Birchencliffe Cricket Club and Birchencliffe Junior Football Club also put on a stellar display for members and the community at the cricket club.

Around 400 people turned out to raise approximately £350 for the three clubs.

Swifts treasurer Julie Whitaker said: “Everybody was soggy. Just as we started the heavens opened up, but people still had a good time.”

Around 2,000 brave souls withstood nature’s assault to watch Elland Round Table’s display at Hullen Edge Rec.

Bonfire chairman Chris Bowen said: “It was the worst weather in the 43 years we’ve done it.

“Obviously, we’d like to thank the people that did come so we’ll be able to do it next year.”

And thanking their lucky stars, were Marsden FC who picked a much drier Friday night.

The display at Fall Lane raised about £1,000 for the club, which is hoping to buy floodlights to enable night-time training.

Club fundraiser Sam Woor said: “It had rained all day and we were a bit worried about it going ahead, but the rain stopped and held off all evening.

“I’m pleased we had Friday and not Saturday.”
