Tips for Bonfire Night fun at an organised event

Make sure to kit out your little ones in warm clothes. You'll be in the cold for a while, so make sure you and your children wear hats, gloves and warm boots. Also, when attending a bonfire, make sure clothing is non-flammable.

If the event organisers are okay with it, take your own flasks of warm drinks to keep toasty.

To keep children occupied before the event, take a few seasonal treats along. Toffee apples, treacle and Parkin are all tasty and easy to carry.

Some children can get scared of loud noises at events. Consider buying some ear-plugs or ear-muffs to dull the sound. And if not, take along an MP3 player and headphones to distract them from the noise.

Tips for Bonfire Night fun at home

The main benefit of holding your own display is that you can have it when you like, in the comfort of your own back garden without dealing with the crowds.

But there are safety considerations you should take into account.

Ensure all fireworks are purchased from a reputable retailer. And don't be afraid to ask sellers for their advice on safe handling of your fireworks - most supermarkets will have leaflets on Bonfire Night safety to hand.

Make sure you store fireworks safely as per the instructions.

Ensure sparklers are handled with care. Children should be supervised and wear gloves at all times. Make sure there's a bucket of water handy to put the sparklers in immediately after they go out. And make sure the kids know they're dangerous and that they're not toys.

Be courteous to your neighbours - knock on their door and let them know what you're planning so they know what to expect. Elderly neighbours or those with young children and babies will appreciate the warning. And be sure to invite them along for the fun!

Set off fireworks early in the evening, rather than late into the night when people may be going to bed.

Young children may enjoy fireworks which are less noisy - there are plenty available.

Keep your pets safe - see below for tips.

Keeping your pets safe on Bonfire Night

Don't leave animals alone.

Walk dogs during the day.

Shut cats in at night.

Use black-out blinds which dampen sound as well blocking out light.

Give your pets space and act normally around them.

Play some soft music or even a little talk-radio - it will distract them.

If your pet feels safe hidden behind the sofa, leave them be.

Distract your pets by playing with them every so often.

When your party is over, give them plenty of attention.
