A friend heading to Yorkshire tells me....

Lovely September afternoon being spent at Newark Northgate with 1000s of other marooned train passengers. Told there’s gonna be just one train north the rest of the day and it’s 10 minutes away - but not a duck in Hell’s chance of us all getting on.

train lines are down on the East Coast line - so anyone coming back North from the smoke this afternoon, your dinner will be in the cat by the time you get back. 5hr delays plus being mooted.

HGV collision at Bradley landfill site

Just a bit more information on the earlier collision in Bradley.

Two HGVs collided when one drove into a stationary one at Bradley Park Waste Management site. Fire crews said a man was cut free from the first vehicle and taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. Luckily, the driver of the parked HGV was not in the vehicle at the time.

Rescue services at Rastrick say it is currently not known what caused the HGV driver’s “lapse in concentration”, but that the vehicle was only travelling between 5 and 10mph at the time.

School lunches not meeting nutritional standards

Here’s a statistic for you to chew on - just 1.6 per cent of schoolchildren’s packed lunches meet nutritional standards.

Research by the University of Leeds found children’s school lunches have improved by just 0.5 per cent in the past ten years.

Only one in five packed lunches contained any form of fruit or vegetables.

Health experts are now appealing to parents to cut the crisps, chocolate biscuits and sugary drinks in their children’s dinners.

Paula Sherriff speaks on tampon tax and Brexit

Dewsbury MP Paula Sherriff spoke in the House of Commons last night asking whether the vote to leave the EU would bring the UK closer to abolishing the controversial tampon tax.

Ms Sherriff has long been a campaigner to cut the tax rate on women’s sanitary products. She asked Brexit Minister David Davis whether the exit from the EU would allow the UK “to set a minimum rate of VAT even after our membership ends” and whether “in that scenario you can give us an absolute guarantee that we will be allowed a zero rate on women’s sanitary products”.

Mr Davis replied saying the greater controls on VAT were “just one of the reasons for wanting to leave the EU”.
