BREAST cancer patients turned catwalk models for the evening – and there were a few surprises in store too.

They glammed up and strutted their stuff last night by taking part in a fashion show at Cedar Court Hotel which is organised by breast care nurses at two local hospitals.

Three women who have had treatment for breast cancer had a big surprise in store for their family and friends cheering them on.

Tracey Elvidge, of Almondbury, Nichola Manning, of Crosland Hill, and Vicky Pamment, of Scholes, are dubbed The Breasties and last night they walked down the catwalk in full bridalwear – complete with little bridesmaids.

And last night one man who has had breast cancer, Herbie Sirmond of Halifax, also took to the stage to highlight that men can be diagnosed with the condition too.

The event was organised and staged by the team at the Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust, whose breast care nurses organise the fashion show every year for patients and their families.

Every year the nurses encouraged the women to embrace the fun and take to the catwalk.

Organiser Veronica Allinson, said: “This is always an amazing night for our patients and their families and a real highlight for our staff as well. We all have a wonderful time seeing our patients, who have gone through so much, put on such a fab show which is always very emotional and very uplifting for everyone involved.”

Participants modelled clothes donated by local stores during yesterday’s show at the Ainley Top hotel.

Mum-of-two Nichola Manning was diagnosed with breast cancer when her baby daughter was four months old.

The 37-year-old has undergone three sets of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy and is now on the road to recovery.

Veronica Allinson thanked all the local stores for supplying the fashions and Smallcog productions at Honley who make a film of the event and present DVDs to all the patients taking part.

Bernadette Gledhill, owner of Morton Gledhill – The Fashion Team agency – choreographed and staged the show as they always do.

She said: “The models are amazing. Our team love being part of this event. It is a joy and an inspiration to be involved.”
