The Huddersfield Carnival office trashed by vandals has been repaired just in time.

Stunned carnival event organisers could not believe  the scale of the damage after intruders broke  in just two weeks ago.

They found carpets uprooted, electrical cables pulled out, holes punched in plaster and even toilets smashed at their upstairs premises at the Lime Bar building in Westgate in Huddersfield town centre.

But the community has rallied around and individual donations and  some of the carnival budget has meant most of  the damage has been repaired and the office will be the administrative hub for today’s carnival.

Some of the  carnival  volunteers have taken time off work to help clear the mess up.

The HQ will also be the venue for the carnival’s after-party.

Treasurer Yvette Monks-Noel said: “The transformation is unbelievable in such a short space of time. The place had been virtually destroyed.

“Everyone has rallied round and it has been a magnificent community effort which shows just how important the carnival is to the people of Huddersfield.

“Groups are travelling here from as far away as London and Birmingham and many stay over so we have been busy sorting hotels out for them. The carnival is also a major boost to the economy.”

The committee, which was gearing up for the 30th Huddersfield carnival, reported the damage to police after they discovered it a week last Sunday morning.

The carnival parade will wind its way through Huddersfield town centre today before going up to Greenhead Park.

Several roads will be closed and the parade is due to set off from the Hudawi Centre on Great Northern Street at 1pm.
