A campaign to raise money and awareness in memory of a tragic young mum who fell from Whitby Cliffs has donated thousands of pounds after its launch event.

Former Shelley High School pupil Kerstin and her husband Stephen Botham raised £1,900 for Action Postpartum Psychosis at a purple party at the Clothiers Arms in Stocksmoor.

They decided to put on the all day event as part of their life-long mission to encourage action to be taken on the mental illness, which they believe claimed the life of their close friend Rosy Hinchliffe last November.

A quiz, raffle and auctions took place, whilst volunteers from the charity and survivors talked about their own experiences.

Kerstin said: “It was a fantastic day raising money and awareness in memory of Rosy.

“It was good to have PP survivors there to show what the charity is all about and how it helps people with this terrifying illness.

“We are now focusing on our team relay triathlon in September.”

Rosy, 28, was due to be a bridesmaid at the couple’s wedding on November 9 2013 but died following an 80ft fall from near Whitby Abbey after taking a taxi from her home in Boothtown, Halifax at around 4am on November 3.

This came only hours after she had been discharged from Calderdale Royal Hospital following a district nurse’s concerns that she was suffering a psychotic episode and only days after she gave birth to daughter, Laney.

Postpartum psychosis develops suddenly in new mothers and affects around one woman in every 1000 pregnancies.

It can cause mania, depression, delusions and hallucinations.

Speaking about her death, Stephen said: “We could not believe that more could not have been done to help Rosy in her hour of need.

“It comes down to awareness at all levels. Knowing the signs, what to do and where to get help is imperative to getting through Postpartum Psychosis.

“This is why we have made it our life’s mission to increase the awareness of a condition that is treatable.”

So far they have already raised £4295, which they hope will be used by APP to create support networks, run workshops and fund research into the condition.
