Top chef and Huddersfield restaurateur Barrington Douglas is to launch his own range of Caribbean-inspired pies and sauces.

Barrington, 46, who opened his Discovery Bay restaurant in Huddersfield seven years ago, has created a range of British food with a Jamaican twist.

After years of development Huddersfield-born Barrington will launch his taste sensations next month.

The range, named simply Barrington’s, includes jerk pork pie, curry chicken pie, four Caribbean sauces, three chutneys and a set of meat rubs.

Barrington hopes to replicate the success of Reggae Reggae Sauce, created by musician Levi Roots, who shot to fame in TV’s Dragons’ Den.

Roots won a £50,000 investment from Peter Jones and Richard Farleigh and launched into Sainsbury’s.

Barrington said: “Reggae Reggae Sauce has led the way for African-Caribbean flavours in the UK food market. However people are always looking for fresh ideas and something new.

“We know Indian, Chinese, Italian, Mexican and French food, for example, are well loved in Britain but African-Caribbean food is less well known.

“I’m surprised by that as Caribbean people have been here for 60 years.

“The new flavours coming through are exciting for everybody. For me putting a fresh spin on British classics, and by doing things a little differently, helps move contemporary Caribbean food forward.”

The range will be available from Discovery Bay, independent food outlets and the soon-to-be-launched Barrington Foods website.

Visitors to Huddersfield Food and Drink Festival, which runs from August 8-11, will be among the first to try the pies and sauces at the Discovery Bay food stall.

Barrington plans to expand and hopes to go national with major supermarket chains.

“If Levi Roots is No1 in the Caribbean food market there is room for me,” said Barrington.

“And I’m not a guitarist or a musician. I’m a chef with a passion for food.”

Barrington’s love of Caribbean flavours comes from his Jamaican-born parents.

He discovered his passion for cooking at the age of 12 by watching mother Valda.

Barrington went on to work alongside celebrity chefs Gary Rhodes and Gordon Ramsey.

His restaurant was featured in Ramsey’s F Word.

Last year Barrington appeared on Marco Pierre White’s Kitchen Wars where he was seen preparing his signature dish of jerk fillet of cod on a bed of Savoy cabbage with pancetta.

“I am British with a Caribbean heritage and I innovate,” said Barrington.
