Councillors will be asked to spread some festive cheer by funding Christmas trees.

Kirklees Council is looking at spending £10,800 on 16 Christmas trees and lights for towns throughout Huddersfield.

A single tree costs £650 to buy, put up and take down, while lights for each tree are £200.

Members of the Huddersfield District Committee will be asked to agree to the funding on Tuesday and the trees will be put up as soon as possible and will remain up until January 6.

In other areas such as Mirfield and the Colne Valley the trees are already going up

Kirklees says: “The funding of Christmas trees will help fulfil a number of council priorities by promoting the sense of local community value and worth.

“The focal point of the Christmas trees enables a number of community events to take place including school and community organised carol concerts, which promote community cohesion and a sense of local ownership.”

If funding is agreed, the following places will get Christmas trees: Almondbury, Lepton, Brackenhall, Deighton, Fartown, Fixby, the Chestnut Centre, Bradley, Crosland Moor, Netherton, Moldgreen, Marsh, Birkby, Lindley, Berry Brow, Springwood and Newsome.

At the same meeting councillors will be asked to fund floral decorations for 2015 and commit £5,494 towards hanging baskets and planters for the Almondbury, Crosland Moor and Netherton and Lindley wards.

Funding decisions will take place at the Huddersfield District Committee on Tuesday at Huddersfield Town Hall at 7pm. The meeting is open to the public and also includes an update on the council’s winter maintenance plans.
