A teacher described as an “absolute inspiration to teachers” has won a national award.

Kirklees College’s Curriculum Team Leader for Teacher Education and Development, Corrine Scandling, was one of just five people from across Great Britain to be given a Silver Pearson’s Teaching Award for FE Teacher of the Year.

Corrine, from Holmfirth, who was also one of only 55 teachers out of 20,000 nominees to have scooped an accolade, said that she was ‘overwhelmed’ to have received it.

In their description, the contest’s judges, who visited the college as part of their decision process, described her as a “highly creative teacher, educator and valued member of staff who has very high expectations of her students.

The Pearson Teaching Awards are an annual celebration of exceptional teachers and teaching, founded in 1999 by Lord Puttnam, they recognise the life-changing impact of an inspirational teacher on the lives of the young people they teach.

Corrine said: “After many years of teaching I can honestly say I have got the best job in the world. It is not often you get praise in teaching although none of us do it for that, it is all about being there for the learners.

“I was pleased just to have been put in for the award in the first place so to have won is totally overwhelming.”

She received her award at the University of Huddersfield from Kirklees College Principal Peter McCann and Head of Department of Initial Teacher Education at the university, Roy Fisher, who said that it was an achievement every teacher should aspire to.

Peter said: “Corrine has had a wonderful impact on the lives of her students. She is always prepared to go that extra mile and her creativity shines through.

“No challenge is too big for Corrine and she is a real inspiration to her students. It is a wonderful accolade and everyone at Kirklees College is extremely proud of her.”

Corinne will now join fellow silver award winners at the UK final of the Teaching Awards at London’s Guildhall on 26th October, which will be broadcast by the BBC, where 10 will be chosen to receive a gold award.

Teaching Awards judges commented: “Corrine has an inspirational impact on the students and teachers of the future. She is a very deserving winner of this prestigious award.”
