COMMUNITY organisations in Huddersfield came together to raise money to help rebuild a village destroyed by the Pakistan floods last summer.

They were able to present a cheque for £14,000 to the relief organisation Muslim Hands.

And are supporting a project to rebuild a village named Ghot Shah Nasar in the Sindh province of Pakistan.

The money will help provide housing, churches, mosques and equipment and resources to restart businesses.

The organisations involved in United Huddersfield were the University of Huddersfield, Kirklees College, Huddersfield Town Football Club, Huddersfield Giants, Kirklees Council, Kirklees Faiths Forum and Huddersfield Pakistani Community Alliance and the Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce.

They have formed a permanent alliance named United Huddersfield so that they can carry on helping those in crisis.

Co-ordinator Mumtaz Ali, from Huddersfield Pakistani Community Alliance, first came up with the idea of forming United Huddersfield.

He told the Examiner: “If there’s a disaster anywhere – locally, nationally or globally – it means we can have a united response to it and help victims.

“The idea came about after the Pakistan floods but we will be able to provide help if another disaster happens.

“We raised the money with a charity dinner, raffle and donations from schools and the Sikh temple.”
