Crowds of cycle racing fans lined the town centre streets for the Huddersfield Criterium 2015.

From 5pm hundreds of spectators started filling St George’s Square at the start and finish line and other streets along the course.

As well as enjoying the amateur races, fans were anxious to see the top club riders and professional race which started at 8.15pm last night.

Spectators browsed at stalls held by the Huddersfield Town Foundation, One 17 Design and others and enjoyed food and drinks supplied by businesses along the route.

Three professional teams - British Cycling, One Pro Cycling and NFTA - fielded riders for this year’s race.

Race organiser and Mirfield councillor, Martyn Bolt, said: “When you have got Team GB you know you’re doing well.

“There’s a good festival atmosphere and after some bad weather, the sun has come out.”

Andy Hobson, director of one of the event’s principal sponsors, Fantastic Media, added: “In spite of the bad weather before, it’s turned out reasonably well.

“The main thing is getting people into Huddersfield. It’s a community event and it’s about putting goodwill back into the community.

“To attract so many international riders to an event in Huddersfield has to be a success.”
