Many ex-pats are deeply worried about the consequences of the UK voting to leave the EU.
Brian Hayhurst, ex-Huddersfield gymnast and former landlord of The Angel pub in Paddock, said the British community in Spain now fear the uncertainty the vote has caused on several issues from the cost of holiday homes to healthcare.
He said: “Most Brits we have spoken to voted to stay and many were not only disappointed and surprised, they were very concerned about their future here in Spain. There are several issues which could affect not only UK residents but thousands of other nationals who have chosen this country to live in. Spain could react badly, although to deter masses of ex pats could dramatically affect that vital income which is helping to re-float Spain economically.
“The weaker GB pound will affect pensions and savings. Also those buying a property will have to fork out much more for a home in the sun if the pound continues to fall.
“The future of literally thousands living and working in Gibraltar wonder what they would do if Spain decided to close the border. We have several friends – builders and executive office workers – who are making contingency plans if the gates are locked as they were when Franco was in charge here.
“For us personally and loads of others of pension age we could lose the amazing health care we all make use of. And we will probably not have an EHIC temporary health care card for trips to other parts of Europe.
Other issues are passports – how valid are they? Will low cost flights still be available? And will more older folks on limited income decide to return to their countries of origin.
“It’s a waiting and watching game ... as it is in Britain.”
