A Huddersfield-born film maker who was a victim of child abuse is embarking on a heart wrenching project to help stamp it out for good.

Judy Goldberg’s short film Be Heard has enrolled over 25 survivors of abuse as actors and film crew in an attempt to encourage people to listen to those that are in danger and ensure more action is taken in schools, the community and at home to prevent it.

Set to be filmed over two days this weekend (26 and 27 April), it will focus on the struggle of a young boy from London to get his voice heard after he speaks up to his teacher following a series of abuses.

Script writer, Rachel Wilson, was one of those selected to help her realise her aim, which she hopes will be financially supported by donations through crowd funding website, Indiegogo.

The film, which is expected to be premiered in London in July, is the latest project for former Scapegoat Hill resident Judy following her record breaking attempt to create a feature length film with the most co-writers, 50 Kisses, earlier this month.

Judy, who spoke up about her own abuse, said: “Like so many others, my story was filled with far too many instances of people reacting with silence and not taking action when I spoke up, which taught me to be quiet and that my voice didn’t matter.

“Clearly it has never been enough to just ‘speak up’- it’s important that appropriate action is taken when someone does so but at the moment there is still a lack of clarity over who is responsible for ensuring a young person’s welfare in some situations, such as in the community and in the home.

“A lot of taboo around the subject still exists which also needs tackling and I hope that the film will help to do so by ensuring that the voices of young survivors of abuse are heard.

“It will be written, directed, edited, produced and acted in by young survivors of abuse and those affected by it and I hope that after it premieres in London we will be able to show it as wide and as far as possible to get the message across.

“Abusers are protected by silence and we need to start addressing this properly by taking those who speak up more seriously.”
