Brighouse woman Shirley Turner has won a bumper hamper of goodies worth hundreds of pounds – and it’s all thanks to her son!

The hamper, packed with delicious fare, was the prize in a competition run by the Examiner and Huddersfield Partnership as part of the Huddersfield Food and Drink Festival.

Charity worker Shirley, who lives at Hove Edge, received her hamper from Hilary Frayne, of the Cedar Court Hotel, Ainley Top.

The hotel donated the biggest single item in the hamper – a party for 10 at Christmas worth £500. Other contributions came from partnership member businesses.

Shirley said she was delighted to win, but admitted she hadn’t intended visiting the food and drink festival at all until her son Nigel and his partner Bego, persuaded her to go with them.

“My son and his partner were visiting from Tenerife,” said Shirley.

“Nigel has lived out there for over 20 years and teaches English as a second language. They went to the food festival on the Thursday and came back excited about it, so we all went there the following day. It was a lovely hot sunny day and I bought lots of things.”

Shirley, 81, worked in the administration department at Brighouse Adult Education Centre before retirement. She is a member of the Heart Beat Group in Brighouse which is raising money to make two defibrillators available in Brighouse shops. She has also started volunteering at the Overgate hospice shop in Brighouse.
