THEY are often seen jumping from building to building.

And this pair can rightly claim to be Huddersfield’s finest free runners.

Reece Holmes, 16, and Chris Taylor, 15, are currently training to conquer the world of urban acrobatics.

The non-competitive sport, which involves using the town landscape or structures to perform movements, is growing in popularity across the UK.

Reece said: “My brother Kyle showed me a video three years ago called Jump Britain and, once I had seen it, I was hooked, I wanted to do it.

“I started practising all the time including in the playground.

“Chris saw me doing some flips and wanted to have a go, so he started to do a bit of free running as well.

“We train every spare minute that we get and thanks to Kirklees Young People Service, we go to Paddock gym on a Friday evening and every so often one in Bradford.

“Free running has really helped us to have a better lifestyle than maybe other people of our age.

“We have a really healthy diet and because we train so often we have to have lots of carbohydrates.”

Reece has recently gained sponsorship from Urban Flow, the network that reaches out to free runners across the UK.

They contacted him after seeing one of his many videos on Youtube.

He recently was put in touch with other free runners and went to London to take part in an event.

One of the pair’s web recently uploaded videos saw them get 1,000 hits in just two days and another has already reached 5,000 hits.

Free running or Parkour started as a non-competitive sport allowing people to combine gymnastics with free movements.

Both Reece and Chris take part in gymnastics to ensure they are adopting a safe approach to the sport.

Chris said: “We used to be fairly badly behaved before took up free running and it has really kept us out of trouble.

“A lot of teenagers our age smoke or do things like that but because of free-running we tend to stay away from all of that.

“There is about 30 of us around Huddersfield that take part in free-running.

“We do get asked to move on most days and with the riots people have had problems. We have especially, because of our sports clothing, but once they realise what we are doing and get to know us, they understand. There are competitions at the highest level and we hope to take part in them. We would both love to do free running full time.

Reece has just finished at King James’ School, in Almondbury and is set to go to Kirklees College to study ICT while Chris will finish his GCSE’s this academic year.
