BOWLERS are hopeful of changing Kirklees Council’s mind about the new sports centre.

Officials announced in February that plans to include a bowling green at the new £36m sports centre in Springwood had been scrapped.

But users of the bowling hall at the current sports centre on Southgate collected more than 1,000 signatures demanding a U-turn.

Kirklees is now reconsidering the plan to scrap the bowling green.

Bowlers met council leader Clr Mehboob Khan this week to discuss the issue.

Huddersfield Indoor Bowling Club secretary Harold Hick said: “I think we have definitely moved forward and it was very pleasing to see a set of plans for the new sports centre which included bowling as part of the offer.

“We believe that with help from the relevant Kirklees officers, which Clr Khan has promised, we will be able to secure the future of indoor bowling in Kirklees.”
