Indoor bowling in Huddersfield could be saved – but it’ll cost £500,000.

Huddersfield Indoor Bowls Club is in talks with undisclosed landowners about building a new bowling centre on their land.

The club hopes to broker a deal with the landowners in a meeting on Tuesday.

But if the deal goes ahead the club will have to find £500,000 to build a new facility.

The club feared its 40-year history was at an end when Kirklees Council announced it had no money to fund the sport in Huddersfield.

Indoor bowling took place at Huddersfield Sports Centre, Southgate. But the council has decided that the new £36m Huddersfield Leisure Centre at Springwood has no facility for bowling, effectively ending the sport in the town.

An alternative facility at Whitcliffe Mount, Cleckheaton, is also doomed as that centre is to be demolished.

Bowlers have battled to keep their sport and celebrated a hugely-successful season with what could be the last awards ceremony. It took place at Canalside, Leeds Road.

Kirklees Council have paid a small sum to Rastrick Bowling Club for a feasibility study into a possible four-lane indoor rink in the Calderdale town – but that is at least two years away.

Huddersfield Indoor Bowls Club is ‘determined’ to keep the sport in Huddersfield and believe the land offer is a feasible option.

Club secretary Damien Talbot says he is hoping to obtain grants from Sport England and other sports funding bodies as well as donations from the club’s 350-plus members.

Mr Talbot said: “It’s a lot of money but we’re determined to do it. We’re determined to keep bowling in Huddersfield.

“We had more than 120 people at our presentation last night and we’re all geared up to support any fundraising.

“That gives us a bit more optimism; it’s the end of an era and hopefully the start of another one.”

Mr Talbot added he would be able to disclose the club’s future location on Tuesday if the meeting was a success.

Winners at the award ceremony included Meltham twins Barry and Steve Nicholson and Marjorie Haigh who took the ladies’ single title.
