Special locks are to be fitted to the disabled toilets at the new Huddersfield Leisure Centre after a rise in thefts and vandalism.

Notices have been posted saying that RADAR locks will be installed and a key must be obtained from reception.

The notice blamed “excessive levels of vandalism and theft".

Kirklees Active Leisure (KAL), which runs the centre, said that able-bodied people were increasingly using the disabled toilets and thefts and damage had been reported.

Items stolen included toilet roll holders, toilet rolls, hairdryers and shower heads.

A spokesman said: “KAL continues to monitor the situation and will take the firmest action possible against individuals found to be taking part in such behaviour.”

The centre in Springwood opened in May last year and has had more than 840,000 visitors.
