CONTROVERSIAL library changes remain a possibility.

Kirklees Council officials have drawn up a proposal to withdraw paid staff from centres in Honley, Golcar, Slaithwaite, Lepton, Kirkheaton, Denby Dale and Shepley.

Some campaigners celebrated victory last week after the BBC wrongly reported that the council had made a “U-turn”.

But council leader Clr Mehboob Khan explained that the volunteer option is still on the table.

“The position on libraries remains unchanged,” said the Greenhead man.

“There are not any plans to close libraries, there have never been any plans to close libraries, the council is committed to ensuring a sustainable libraries service which should involve local volunteers.”

Martin Jones of Save Slaithwaite Library said yesterday: “Look North reported that the seven village libraries facing cuts by replacing paid staff with volunteers had been reprieved for the next three years.

“Over the next couple of days it became clear this was not the case and campaigners have had to cut short their celebrations.

“We are determined to redouble our efforts and campaign with renewed vigour to prevent these harmful changes to our village libraries.”
