Huddersfield Lions have unveiled a “sparkling” array of fundraising events for its diamond anniversary appeal.

The club is celebrating 60 years with a £50,000 appeal to pay for a new kitchen at Kirkwood Hospice.

The Cash for Cuisine project was chosen by Examiner readers last year.

The Dalton-based hospice needs £50,000 to replace the kitchen which has served patients since it opened in March 1987.

Over the next eight months there will be a series of events, starting with an Easter egg raffle at pubs and clubs throughout Kirklees during March and followed by a big summer raffle.

The two biggest events planned will be a hot rod car show in September and a swim-a-thon at the new Huddersfield Leisure Centre in October.

The final details have still to be confirmed but the hot rod show is set for the weekend of September 19 and 20 at Lepton Highlanders’ sports ground.

The Lions hope it will become a regular on the hot rod enthusiasts’ calendar.

The swim-a-thon, meanwhile, will be aimed at youngsters and the Lions will be contacting schools and youth organisations inviting them to take part.

Lions president Graham Isley said: “We really need to inspire everyone in the Kirklees community to back and support this project by participating in these events but also by getting involved as well.

“This is a big project but people may be surprised to learn how few of us there are.

“We need new members to help us to plan and run this ambitious schedule.”

Graham added: “All adults are welcome to join the Lions regardless of class, age, ethnicity or gender. You just need to be enthusiastic.”
