A man has been jailed for 16 months after heroin was found in a car following a police chase.

Leeds Crown Court heard officers decided to follow a Renault Clio in the early hours of May 20 last year after it appeared to be going at an excessive speed in Birkby Lodge Road, Huddersfield.

They pursued the vehicle and lost sight of it for a while before spotting it again in Bradford Road, said Ben Crosland prosecuting.

At that point the driver Ambeer Khan turned left into Honoria Street and lost control of the vehicle. He got out and made off on foot but after a search he was found hiding under a hedge.

The vehicle was then searched and in the passenger footwell 18 wraps of heroin weighing 2.43 grammes and £220 cash was found. Khan also had £105 on him.

Conor Quinn representing Khan said he made a stupid decision to collect the drugs for someone else after consuming alcohol and taking cannabis in the hope of “making a quick buck”. The money in the vehicle was not his.

He asked the judge to bear in mind the total sentence since in January this year at Bradford Crown Court Khan received two months in custody for the driving offences that night which had put him in breach of an earlier suspended sentence for which he had received a further two months.

Khan, 22 of Alder Street, Hillhouse, Huddersfield, admitted possessing heroin with intent to supply.

Judge Geoffrey Marson QC told him there had to be an immediate jail sentence. “You were effectively a courier collecting drugs, 18 wraps of heroin. Those who become involved in any way in participating in the supply of Class A controlled drugs are participating in a vile trade.”
