A Huddersfield man has lost hundreds of pounds to a town centre sofa shop that failed to close despite being taken into liquidation.

Almondbury resident Brian Henson, 35, lost £550 after buying a three piece black leather Biselle sofa and two chairs from i-Sleep on New Street on January 18.

He was unaware that the company behind it, I-Sleep Ltd, had been declared insolvent by the Insolvency Service 10 days previously due to it remaining open under the same name.

The company and shop came under the spotlight last year when the Huddersfield Daily Examiner reported that the firm had been fined for supplying unsafe furniture and that the shop had allegedly sold a urine soaked bed to a customer.

Mr Henson paid an employee for the suite in cash in two instalments and was told that it would be delivered on February 6.

However, the delivery never came and he was placed in what he describes as a ‘never-ending battle’ to find out what has happened to his money and his order.

The store is now being run by new owners trading under the name Furniche 4 Less. However, a new worker said they were unsure who their employer was.

They added that they have had several customer queries who placed orders at the same time about the location of stock.

Dad-of-two Mr Henson said: “I can’t believe what has happened and that they continued to trade despite going into liquidation.

“The way I have been treated is disgusting and I wish that someone had been able to ensure the shop was no longer able to trade after becoming insolvent.

“I was promised a delivery on several occasions but they never arrived.

“The shopworker I bought the suite from left the company but when I rang him he said that my order was being processed by a warehouse in Dewsbury.

“They have promised to deliver it on several occasions but this has never happened and now they say that I may not get one.

“I feel totally helpless and have no idea who is in charge of my order, if anyone.

“I wish I had never set foot in the place.”

He has contacted Trading Standards and has since been added to a list of creditors awaiting payment.

A group of five companies trading under the i-Sleep umbrella went into liquidation on January 8, including Wakefield-based i-Sleep Ltd, which sold furniture in shops in Huddersfield and Dewsbury,

A spokesperson from the Insolvency Service said that 870 customer complaints had been made to the companies in 2013, which suggested ‘a serious disregard for customers and consumers and disreputable trading methods.’

Newsome Green councillor Andrew Cooper urged anyone who had problems with their order from the shop to contact West Yorkshire Trading Standards.
