A man was stabbed in the stomach after he refused to give a stranger a cigarette.

The 23-year-old victim was treated by paramedics following the incident in a Huddersfield street.

The attack happened at corner of Alder Street and Willow Lane East at 9.15pm on Thursday, February 19, but details have only just been released by police.

Detectives said the victim was approached by a man who asked him for a cigarette.

When the victim refused, the man started shouting and swearing at him before producing a small black flick-knife and stabbing him in the stomach.

The victim was able to make his way to a place of safety where an ambulance was called.

He was treated for a non-life threatening stab wound.

Now the police have released an e-fit image of the man.

Det Con Kris Roberts, of Kirklees District CID, said: “This was a seemingly unprovoked attack on a complete stranger and we are keen to identify the man pictured in this e-fit image as part of our ongoing enquiries.

“I would stress that attacks such as this are uncommon and we are doing all we can to identify the man responsible.”

The man is described as being of mixed race, aged in his mid 20s, around 5ft 3ins tall, of medium build, with black hair and black beard. He was wearing a short black jacket, black trousers and black trainers. He may have been with another man and a woman.

Anyone with information about the man pictured in the e-fit, or who was in the area around the time of the offence and saw a man matching the suspect’s description, possibly in the company of a man and woman, is asked to contact Kirklees District CID on 101.

In unrelated investigations, police would like to speak to the people pictured in the image gallery below. The people pictured in the images may be witnesses as well as suspects. If you recognise anyone, contact police on 101 quoting the reference number on the image caption.
