Dozens of motorcyclists rode through Huddersfield to raise awareness of their club on its 21st anniversary.

More than 30 people on 25 bikes from Huddersfield Motorcycle Action Group and as far away as Hull braved heavy rain and poor visibility to take a tour of the town centre to celebrate the milestone achievement of the club.

Set up to help preserve their way of life and campaign on riders’ rights, the club has been acting as a vital community hub for local motorcyclists since it relaunched in 1993.

They donned their finest leathers to ride two laps around the town’s ring road on finely polished bikes before riding up past Greenhead Park.

Then they stopped at the Fieldhead pub in Quarmby Road for a barbecue, drinks and raffle and even defied their rock n’ roll image to make the most of a selection of birthday cakes.

Colne Valley MP and MAG member Jason McCartney also made a speech on the importance of the group, which is a volunteer-led group that represents motorcyclists in local and national government.

More than £120 was raised on the day, which will be shared between the local group, the national organisation and Kirkwood Hospice.

One of the group’s members, Ali Preston, said: “It was a fantastic day and we were so pleased that people came from so far away to spend time with us.

“MAG groups are like a big family and we help preserve motor bike riding culture which, for our members, is a way of life.

“Ensuring that motorcyclists rights’ are protected and strengthened is also really important so that we can stay safe on the roads, whether we use the bikes for leisure, work or both.”

The national MAG was set up in 1973 for riders of all levels and puts on and supports numerous parties and rallies, competitions and tours each year.

Yorkshire MAG’s farmyard party rally will take place on the Duncombe Park Estate in Helmsley, North Yorkshire, from June 20 to 22.
