HUDDERSFIELD’S MP urged the Prime Minister to stop jobs in banking leaving Yorkshire.

Barry Sheerman is worried that Lloyds – which is propped up with taxpayers’ money – plans to move staff from Halifax to Peterborough.

The Labour MP – a recent critic of Gordon Brown – asked him to step in during yesterday’s Prime Minister’s Questions.

Mr Sheerman said: “Could you talk to the management of Lloyds urgently and point out that we are major shareholders in their bank and expect better standards than this?”

Mr Brown replied: “Lloyds made promises at the time when they took over HBOS about what they were doing to safeguard their employees and we will look at that in the context.

“Any jobs to be lost are to be regretted and we will do everything we can.”

Lloyds has 6,000 staff based in Halifax, many of whom live in Huddersfield. The bank was partly-nationalised to prevent it going bust.

Mr Sheerman told the Examiner yesterday: “I have spoken to employees who think there are plans to move many jobs to Peterborough. This is a bank with some public ownership.”
