A cycle race held on the eve of the Tour de France will provide a big boost to Huddersfield town centre, say organisers.

Joint organiser of the first Huddersfield One Community Criterium Clr Martyn Bolt hailed the example of Aberystwyth.

The Welsh town, badly hit by the recent storms, has hosted a Tour Series race for the last three years.

The local authority Ceridigion Council has received £560,000 from the Welsh government to repair storm damage and kickstart tourism.

The event is so important to Aberystwyth and its weekend Cycle Festival that the council is to spend £25,000 of the government cash to bring back the race, won last year by former Upperthong Olympic gold medallist Ed Clancy.

Clr Bolt said: “The fact that Aberystwyth is willing to put money granted after the storms into staging this race again shows the economic benefits.

“Huddersfield will receive a boost in the same way.”

The race will be held on July 4 and town centre roads will be closed.
