A 66-year-old woman had her handbag snatched as she loaded shopping into her car.

Detectives are hunting a man who grabbed the pensioner’s bag at Sainsbury’s at Southgate at 1.15pm on Tuesday and ran off towards the canal.

Det Con Andy Clayton, from Huddersfield CID, said: “As the victim was loading her shopping the suspect asked if she needed any help to which she replied that she didn’t.

“The suspect then grabbed hold of the victim’s handbag, which she was carrying over her shoulder.

“After stealing the handbag the suspect fled on foot in the direction of the canal.

“The suspect is described as a white male, around 25 to 30 years of age, slim build and around 5ft 8ins tall with shaved or balding hair.

“He appeared to have a scruffy, thin face and was wearing a green or grey coloured hooded top with the hood pulled up.

“I am appealing to anyone who witnessed this incident or who may have seen someone matching the description in the time immediately after the robbery to contact police.

“The supermarket was busy at the time and it’s possible someone could have seen the suspect running away or may have been approached by him prior to the robbery taking place.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact DC Clayton at Huddersfield CID via 101.
