A postman has appeared in court accused of stealing dozens of DVDs, Blu-ray discs and computer games from his employer.

Mark Sandell, 45 of Fernlea Grove, Golcar is accused of stealing 71 items from Royal Mail between July 8, 2008 and April 3 this year.

Kirklees Magistrates Court heard that Sandell had been a postman operating out of the Huddersfield delivery office for 27 years.

But an investigation was launched after suspicions were raised that he had stolen items.

Police searched his house and found the haul of packets addressed to other people.

It is estimated the value of the items is in excess of £2,000.

He made no plea and magistrates decided to send the case to Leeds Crown Court as the sentencing guidelines for the alleged crime exceeded their powers.

Sandell was given unconditional bail and is due to appear before judges in Leeds on August 5 at 10am.
