New owner Graham Parker plans to turn back the clock by transforming a Huddersfield pub which could have faced demolition into a traditional local.

The 60-year-old has bought The Queen in Manchester Road, Milnsbridge, and aims to bring in folk music and real ales.

There were fears the pub, which was sold by Admiral Taverns, could have been knocked down, and the area redeveloped.

And Mr Parker, who hails from Whitby and has strong connections to the Huddersfield area, said the local community will benefit from the Queen’s survival.

“There was a danger the pub was going to be sold off for development, and it’s nice to be able to save it for the local community. To lose the Queen would have been sad.

“In Whitby during folk week the pubs have impromptu singing and people making merry, and I aim to bring a little bit of that here on the accoustic folk theme.

“The emphasis will be on traditional folk, real ales and ciders, and people seem very enthusiastic about it.”

Mr Parker has worked in the pub business for many years and believes there is a market for a traditional local.

The Leeds office of leisure property specialists Fleurets dealt with the freehold sale of the Queen on behalf of Admiral Taverns.

A detached stone built property, it fronts the main A62.

It was sold for an undisclosed price off an asking price of £150,000.

Nick Thomas, of Fleurets, said: “It’s pleasing to see that the Queen will continue to trade as a public house and, as such, is one of an increasing number of pub company sales which are selling for continued use.”

Mr Parker is waiting for paperwork to be completed before the pub can reopen, hopefully within a couple of weeks.
