Residents living near the new sports centre building site are seeking disturbance money from Kirklees Council.

The tenants and residents of Spring Grove Street have submitted a petition urging Kirklees Council to pay out over noise, dirt, dust and disturbance.

The petition was handed to Kirklees Cabinet by ward member Clr Andrew Cooper.

In it the residents say they are seeking “disturbance money from having the sports centre build forced upon” them.

They say work begins at 7.30am and ends at 5pm Monday to Friday and there is noise, dust, vibrations from machinery, a loss of light and a loss of value to properties.

It says most of the residents are pensioners and they’re asking for £1,000 towards the cost of activities.

The petition concludes, saying “remember we are going to have this for the next two years”.

Clr Mehboob Khan accepted the petition and said the appropriate director would consider it and report back to members and ward councillors.

Workmen moved onto the former car park site at Springwood last month to begin work on the new leisure centre.

The new £36m funded sports centre will be open to the public in 2015. It replaces the current sports centre on Southgate which will be pulled down to make way for a new Tesco store.
