A road outside Huddersfield’s new Leisure Centre is to be re-surfaced.

Work will start on Sunday, April 12, in Merton Street, Springwood, Huddersfield

The works, which are taking place between Water Street and Huddersfield ring road will be completed over three consecutive Sundays, weather permitting.

Traffic restrictions will be in place which will inevitably cause some delays and disruption.

Road users are asked to find alternative routes if possible. Kirklees Council said the aim was to minimise the disruption to traffic using roads in the area, but also for local people and businesses whilst the work is taking place.

The traffic restrictions will comprise of a road closure from Springwood Avenue to Huddersfield ring road between the hours of 8am and 5pm and a lane closure on Huddersfield ring road.

A council spokesman said: “Temporary traffic signs will appear at the points of the closures in advance to warn and inform road users.

Springwood car park will be closed for all three Sundays as access cannot be maintained.

“The diversion route will be signed and drivers are asked to leave extra time for their journey.

“Adjacent premises will be kept informed of developments and where possible we will provide assistance or measures to minimise disruption and disturbance whilst the works are taking place”.

The road runs along the main en trance of the new £36m Leisure Centre which is nearing completion on part of the former car park.

Contractors are putting the finishing touches to the centre which is expected to open within weeks.

It will replace the existing Huddersfield Sports Centre in Southgate, which is set to be demolished.
